Volunteer with Disabled Children in Tanzania

Hands-On Care & Inclusive Learning with HostelHoff

Local centres for children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other disabilities in and around Arusha rely on volunteers to help them thrive. Join as a volunteer with disabled children in Tanzania, and you’ll support therapy sessions, lead sensory play, and help mark every small milestone.

This placement suits anyone looking for a special needs volunteer role in Tanzania or a wider disability support experience in Africa. Guided by local therapists and care staff, you’ll pick up adaptive techniques while giving stretched families some much-needed relief. Bring patience, creativity, and an open heart. Together we can make possible small victories, life-changing progress for these children.

A Life-Changing Volunteer Opportunity

HostelHoff’s Disabled Children’s project gives you a genuine, hands-on role supporting children with disabilities in Tanzania. Working alongside a dedicated team of therapists, social workers, and educators, you will help deliver essential care, including physiotherapy support, speech and communication activities, and life-skills training.

Volunteers play a central part here: helping with physical therapy exercises, playing with the children, helping prepare meals, supporting reading and writing. The project also runs an outreach arm, with home visits that bring care and education to families who can’t get their children to the centre, and that help build community understanding of disability and reduce stigma. In your time off, there’s plenty of Tanzania to explore too.

By joining, you will be part of a program that connects healthcare, education, and community awareness, supporting not just the children, but the families and communities around them.

Your Impact as a Volunteer

As a volunteer, you will be creating a huge impact in the lives of the people in and around you. Let us look at them in detail:

Assist with Physiotherapy and Daily Care

Working closely with skilled therapists, you will help children build physical strength and mobility, from supervised physiotherapy exercises to everyday care like feeding, dressing, and basic movement support. You do not need a medical background; just a willingness to learn and show up consistently is enough. Your time here makes a direct, tangible difference to a child’s health and wellbeing.

Support Educational and Sensory Activities

You will help with reading, writing, and interactive play tailored to each child’s abilities, contributing to their cognitive and social development. Whether or not you have an education or healthcare background, your involvement helps create a more inclusive learning environment, builds confidence in children, and leaves a lasting mark on their future.

Take Part in Community Outreach

This project reaches beyond the centre’s walls. As part of the outreach program, you will accompany staff on visits to local families, helping deliver care and education to children who cannot attend in person. You will also help parents and the wider community understand the rights and needs of disabled children, helping to reduce stigma and cultural barriers over time.

The Impact You Will Make

Volunteering with this project makes a real difference for children who often have limited access to therapy, education, or specialised care. Your time helps improve mobility, communication, and quality of life, and gives overstretched families a little breathing room.

Through the outreach side of the project, your presence also helps equip parents with practical knowledge, helps shift community behavior towards disability, and builds a more inclusive environment over time.

Every session, every small breakthrough, adds up to something lasting, for the child, and for the family around them.

Hear from Other Volunteers

Emily, USA: “I was nervous at first because of the language barrier, but the staff brought me in gradually, and by the end I could really connect with the kids. Watching them celebrate every bit of progress stuck with me.”

Wei Chen, China: “A month at the centre changed how I see everything. The whole team was warm and clearly cared; I’d recommend it without hesitation.”

Jule, Germany: “I felt out of my depth the first week, not speaking Swahili. But the staff kept including me more, and eventually I felt less like a visitor and more like part of the team.”

Before you land in Tanzania, you should know which sectors you will be receiving support from the team at Hostel Hoff:

  • Pre-arrival support by email, WhatsApp, phone, or video call.
  • Guidance and advice about the project before you arrive.
  • Airport or bus station pickup on arrival.
  • Airport or bus station drop-off on departure.
  • A personalised orientation in Arusha, including help getting a local SIM card and using public transport.
  • On your first day, a coordinator will accompany you to the project to help you settle in.
  • Accommodation at our hostel, dormitory, or private room options.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, seven days a week.
  • 24/7 support from our volunteer coordinators.
  • Optional add-on activities such as safaris and Kilimanjaro treks, arranged for an extra cost.

Which airport should I fly into?

The nearest airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Arusha Airport (ARK) is a smaller domestic-only alternative. We can arrange pickup at any time, day or night, so pick whichever flight suits you.

Which visa do I need?

Most volunteers need an Ordinary visa for humanitarian or charity purposes, available on arrival for most nationalities. It is valid for three months and can usually be renewed once. Staying longer than six months requires a Resident Permit; we can advise you on this once your dates are confirmed.

How safe is Arusha?

Arusha is generally safe for volunteers, and our accommodation has security measures in place, including a night guard. As in any city, we recommend taking a taxi after dark rather than walking. You will get a full safety briefing during the orientation.

Do I need experience working with children with disabilities?

No. The centre’s therapists and staff provide full guidance. What matters most is patience, empathy, and a genuine willingness to learn.
